What Sport Can Teach Businesses About Team Culture

Sport and business have more in common than people often realise. Both rely on teamwork, discipline, trust and continual improvement over time.

As our MD James Biggin celebrates 25 years with the business this month, here he reflects on how lessons learned through sport continue to influence his leadership, teamwork and business culture today.

Watch our latest BPM Series video below, where James shares the crossover between sport and business, and why building strong teams remains one of the most important foundations for long-term success.

Lessons From Sport That Apply to Business

James’ perspective on teamwork and business culture has been heavily influenced by his own sporting background.

Having grown up playing many different sports – and continuing into adulthood through running marathons and ultra marathons – sport has played a major part in shaping the way he approaches leadership and the growth of Steel City.

Following a marathon personal best at the York Marathon, James earned selection for England Masters, something he credits to consistency, preparation and long-term commitment; principles that continue to influence his approach to business today.

Sport teaches you about people. It teaches discipline, consistency, preparation and resilience. Progress rarely happens overnight; it comes from repeated effort, maintaining focus and continually improving over time.

Those same principles apply within business. Building a strong team, developing company culture and delivering consistently for customers all require long-term commitment rather than short-term thinking.

“Much like business, sport often comes down to pacing yourself correctly, trusting the process and staying consistent over the long term.”

James Biggin

How Discipline Improves Business Performance

One of the biggest lessons sport teaches is discipline. Training regularly, staying focused and continually improving are habits that naturally transfer into business.

Success rarely happens instantly in sport or business. It comes from consistency, preparation and maintaining standards even when things become difficult.

For businesses, that same mindset helps teams:

  • Stay motivated
  • Improve performance
  • Deliver consistently for customers
  • Adapt under pressure

Why Team Culture & Identity Matters in Business

Sporting teams create strong identities through shared goals, values and visual unity. Businesses often do the same.

Whether it’s company culture, team mentality, or branded clothing, creating a sense of belonging can positively influence morale and performance.

In many workplaces, that identity can also extend beyond uniforms through branded office merchandise, onboarding packs and everyday items that help employees feel connected to the wider team and company culture.

This is one reason many businesses invest in strong internal branding and professional teamwear. Connected teams often perform more confidently, communicate more effectively and create stronger workplace cultures overall.

Strong Teams Understand Each Other

In sport, every player has different strengths and weaknesses. Great teams succeed because individuals understand how to support one another.

Many of the same principles apply within business too.

Some people excel in sales, others in operations, creativity or organisation. Building a successful company means recognising those strengths and creating an environment where people can work together effectively.

At Steel City, building a supportive and collaborative culture has always been an important part of the business. You can learn more about the people behind the company on our Meet the Team page.

That team-first mentality often creates stronger long-term business performance than focusing purely on individual success.

Confidence Matters More Than Competition

One of the most valuable sporting mindsets in business is confidence in your own ability.

If your team is prepared, skilled and committed to delivering quality work, there’s less need to constantly focus on competitors.

As with sport, performance usually improves when businesses focus on raising standards, developing people, strengthening culture and delivering consistently over time rather than constantly looking over their shoulder at competitors.

“If you’re the best at what you do, you shouldn’t have to keep looking over your shoulder. You should be confident in your ability and confident in your team.”

From discipline and leadership to teamwork and confidence – many of the lessons learned through sport can directly shape stronger businesses and better workplace cultures.
