Update 24th September 2020: Face coverings are now mandatory for bar staff and non-seated customers, shop workers and waiters. Those who do not comply will face a £200 fine.

- From 24th July, they were made mandatory in all shops and supermarkets and shopping centres in England.
- From the 15th June, the UK government made face coverings mandatory on public transport (aeroplanes, trains, trams and buses).
- Since mid-May, face coverings were advised for any enclosed public spaces.

Why use a face covering?
Not to be confused with face masks (PPE) or Surgical/medical masks, face coverings are largely intended to protect others against the spread of infection, rather than the wearer. Like many respiratory infections, the nose and mouth are the main confirmed sources of transmission of the virus that causes coronavirus infection (COVID-19). By covering them, we are helping to prevent the spread of the virus. Simply by wearing a face mask it can also act as a deterrent to touching your face – studies have shown we touch our faces on average 16 times an hour!
