Key Information

Any clothing worn that is exceptionally luminous in its natural matte characteristic or colour and immediately distinguishable from any background is considered high-visibility clothing, also known as hi vis or hi-viz.

The torso and arm regions of the body are where it is most frequently worn. As a type of personal protection equipment, high visibility clothing is commonly required by health and safety requirements. High visibility vests come in various hues, with yellow and orange being the most popular choices. It’s possible that colours other than yellow or orange won’t provide enough brightness to meet requirements like ISO 20471.

High-visibility clothing is worn as personal protective equipment to improve one’s visibility and thereby avoid accidents brought on by one’s inability to be seen. It’s therefore frequently worn in professions where hazardous situations are brought by moving cars or poor lighting. These careers include those in the emergency services, airport, and transportation industries. High-visibility gear is another option for cyclists and motorcyclists who want to be more visible when operating near moving vehicles. To avoid unintentional shooting, hunters may be required to wear unique high-visibility apparel.

Some reflective tapes applied to clothing with great visibility can reflect up to 82% of the source light, harming the retina. Therefore, it’s advised that professional truck/bus drivers, heavy equipment operators, and aircraft pilots avoid wearing highly luminous apparel while performing their professions.

Hi-vis apparel is constructed of reflective tape and fluorescent material to increase visibility. Most hi vis vests are made from polyester, and hi vis jackets tend to be a mix of polyester and fleece.

In general, high-visibility attire is washable up to 25 times. In other words, you should have enough high-visibility apparel for about three months. It should be washed as often as your normal clothing.

Washing them too frequently will reduce their fluorescent degree of visibility, and washing them seldom will cause dirt to accumulate, again reducing the visibility.

Hi-vis apparel is very adaptable and used in various professions and leisure pursuits. Hi-visibility clothing is not exclusive to one group, including joggers and construction workers.

Wearing high-visibility clothes makes it possible for the wearer to be seen clearly, which can help to reduce the risk of accidents. Additionally, authorised staff members can be recognised in the workplace and by the general public thanks to hi-vis clothing.

Fluorescent colours react with the sun’s UV rays to make them appear to ‘glow,’ enhancing daylight visibility. The effect is more pronounced when there is less light, like in fog or as darkness approaches.
Wearing or carrying something ‘high-vis’ that has both fluorescent and reflective materials will help you to be seen during the day, dusk, and night.
‘Fluorescent for the day, reflective for the night.’ At night, light from sources like car headlights bounces off the reflective areas to make the tape glow, increasing night-time visibility.

Light can be reflected by white or pale materials such as a newspaper or white carrier bag; these can reflect light but spread it in all directions so a motorist will perceive some brightness,
But it must be dark to work correctly, and there must be a light source, such as a car headlight.
Unique reflective materials, however, perform significantly better. Because they are made to reflect most light back to its source rather than scatter it, they are referred to as ‘retro-reflective’ materials. A driver’s headlights will bounce light directly back at them, giving them a clear view of the reflecting surfaces.
Reflective materials can make you three seconds more visible to drivers at night, which could save your life.
Many people are unaware of this, however… Unless the reflecting material is also luminous, wearing reflective material won’t necessarily make you more visible during the day. Even while reflective tape occasionally glimmers in the sun, it doesn’t properly stand out to drivers until after nightfall. Thus, adding a reflector to a young child’s school bag won’t make them more visible because most trips to and from primary school take place in daylight or close to dusk unless the reflector is also fluorescent, which is visible in daylight/dusk.

High-visibility apparel is divided into three categories: class 1, class 2, and class 3. Class 1 represents the lowest visibility, class 2 is the middle level, and class 3 is the maximum level.

The certification is based on the following two classes’ minimal requirements: 1. FLUORESCENT MATERIAL and 2. REFLECTIVE TAPE:
